Two months ago, we organized an event called “Tenenet: Seeking Light in Times of Darkness” that was centered on mental wellness and lifting the stigma off mental illness. Often overlooked and frequently dismissed as either a weakness or a sign of spiritual imbalance, the truth is that mental issues ranging from depression, anxiety and more severe pathologies effect a broad segment of our community either directly or indirectly.

The first Tenenet event drew over 100 people as a panel discussion led by mental health professionals and leaders from the Orthodox Church and the Muslim faith led a discussion and provided much needed insights and solutions for those in attendance, the event was so successful and the reception was so overwhelming that we decided to organize a second event.

As before, we will have mental health professionals and faith based leaders on a panel. This time, the conversation will be more than just spreading awareness and will drill down into how we can ensure that our needs are addressed, discuss ways to garner resources towards this end and provide ways for Ethiopians who want to be a part of a solution so that we can take on this pressing issue as a community.

The next Tenenet event will be held at the Rockville Office Building in Rockville, Maryland on Saturday, October 19th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. If you are in the DC Metro area, come out to this important community discussion and take part in a solution forum. We will also livestream the event on our YouTube channel.
